CAMHS Workforce NHSScotland

This release by NHS Education for Scotland (NES) provides a quarterly update, as at 30 June 2020, on the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) workforce staff in post and staff in training.

Figures are presented as headcount (actual numbers of staff) and whole time equivalent (WTE), which adjusts the figures to take account of part time working.

At 30 June 2020:

• There were 1,080.9 WTE staff in post within NHSScotland CAMHS, an increase of 65.3% since 2006, 8.8% since 31 March 2016, and an increase of 2.7% since 30 June 2019. Of the total staff in post, 4.1% of staff were on maternity leave and 1.9% were on long term sick leave.

• There were 733.9 WTE (67.9%) CAMHS staff working in whole-time posts and 347.1 WTE (32.1%) working in part-time posts, an increase of 70.2% in part-time posts and 12.3% in whole-time posts since March 2011 and 3.7% in part-time posts and 1.3% in whole-time posts since June 2019 census. Within the Medical professional group, 56.5% of staff worked part-time, compared to 45.7% in the Psychology professional group and 17.4% in the Nursing professional group.

• Of the total NHSScotland CAMHS workforce, 911.4 WTE (84.3%) were female staff and 162.7 WTE (15.1%) were male staff. The WTE of male staff decreased by 5.9% and the WTE of female staff increased by 33.1% since March 2011. This is an increase of 1.3% of male staff and 3.7% of female staff since last year census.

• There were 52.2 WTE vacancies of which 59% of vacancies were in the Nursing professional group and 23.8% of vacancies were in the Psychology professional group. The WTE of vacancies decreased by 45.9% since June 2019 census and increased by 46.8% since March 2016 census. Of the total vacancies advertised, 68% were advertised for less than 3 months, 21.6% were advertised for 3- 6 months and 10.3% were advertised for more than 6 months.
