About this release

This release by NHS Education for Scotland (NES) provides a quarterly update, as at 30 June 2020,
on the Psychology Services workforce staff in post, vacant posts and trainees.

Figures are presented as headcount (actual number of staff) and whole time equivalent (WTE),
which adjusts the figures to take account of part-time working.

Main Points

As at 30 June 2020:

  • Within Psychology Services in NHSScotland, there were a total of 1293.2 WTE (1,564 headcount) clinical staff in post. This is the highest WTE and headcount seen within NHSScotland Psychology Services: 103.8% (658.8 WTE) higher than in September 2006, 9.6% (113.3 WTE) higher than reported 12 months previously and 6.5% (79.1 WTE) higher than the previous quarter.
  • Out of an establishment of 1387.0 WTE, 86.9% (1205.9 WTE) of staff were working in post as at 30
    June 2020, 5.5% (76.7 WTE) were on Maternity/Parental leave, 0.8% (10.6 WTE) were on long‑term
    sick leave and 6.8% (93.8 WTE) of posts were vacant.
  • As at 30 June 2020, 57.2% (762 headcount) of female staff worked part-time, compared to 57.6%
    (707 headcount) in June 2019. Substantially fewer male than female staff worked part-time as
    at 30 June 2020 (29.9%, 69 headcount), however this is a slightly higher proportion of part-time
    male staff than one year previously (27.6%, 56 headcount).
  • Out of the total of 93.8 WTE advertised vacancies, 48.9% (45.9 WTE) had been advertised for less
    than three months, 31.9% (29.9 WTE) for three to six months and 13.2% (12.4 WTE) for longer than
    six months. Data on vacancy length were unavailable for 6.0% (5.6 WTE) of advertised posts.
    The vacancy rate was 6.8%, compared to 8.6% in June 2019. A further 33.8 WTE vacancies were
    approved but not yet advertised.
