NHSScotland workforce

This release by NHS Education for Scotland (NES) provides a quarterly update, as at 30 September 2021. This includes the number of staff directly employed by NHSScotland and the number of vacant posts there were for nursing and midwifery staff, allied health professions, and medical and dental consultants. When describing the size of a particular staff group figures are presented either as headcount (actual number of staff) or whole time equivalent (WTE) which adjusts the headcount to take account of part time working.

As part of the development of the data warehouse we reviewed historic employment data and made numerous improvements to how these data are processed and reported. As a result of these improvements there will be some minor differences between the statistics published from the warehouse compared with previously published statistics. This means that this publication contains a planned revision of employment data (which has impacts on vacancy rate and turnover measures), and sickness absence data.
