About this release

This release by Public Services Delivery (PSD) Scotland provides the quarterly update, as at 30 June 2026. This includes the number of staff directly employed by NHS Scotland and the number of vacant posts there were for nursing and midwifery staff, allied health professions, and medical and dental consultants.

When describing the size of a particular staff group figures are presented as headcount (actual number of staff) or whole time equivalent (WTE) which adjusts the headcount to take account of part time working.

New for this release: mean WTE of NHS Scotland employment; NHS Scotland employment per 10,000 population; and a breakdown of medical and dental agency locum expenditure for resident doctors and senior doctors for the year ending 31 March 2026.
